In most cases three coats are required for using underglaze. Each coat should be applied in opposite directions.
Proper overglaze decorating begins with the greenware. Greenware which is to be overglazed should be carefully cleaned and fired to cone 04
A favourite technique for the use of underglazes is sgrafitto. Apply your normal three coats and let dry. Transfer a pattern to piece and, with a sharp tool, scribe or cut through the underglaze into the greenware. You should slightly dampen lines you are scribing to prevent chipping. When completed, fire as normal, then add covering glaze and fire again. Scribed lines will show white through your underglaze covering.
Since underglazes are largely clay, you can use this as a decorating advantage. Combine some ground clay with the application of your underglaze colours and apply three coats. The piece will have texture.
You can make overglazes thicker by pouring a little in a clean dish and exposing it to the air for a time, allowing a bit of evaporation.
Unless a special technique is desired, underglazes require a sealing coat of fired glaze.
To help remove the lid from a jar, place it on the floor and roll the top of the jar with the ball of the foot back and forth several times.
When using a brush to apply overglazes, it is best accomplished with the largest brush suitable to the object being decorated.
It is possible to polish underglazes in special techniques. The regular three coats are applied, followed by a fourth. Before the fourth is dry, polish with a soft rag to a satin sheen.
It is important to keep your brush loaded when applying underglazes, but you do not want to add colour as you would when painting a house.
