August 8, 2003, Newsletter Issue #151: Underglazes: Application

Tip of the Week

When using a brush to apply overglazes, it is best accomplished with the largest brush suitable to the object being decorated.

It is important to keep your brush loaded when applying underglazes, but you do not want to add colour as you would when painting a house.

In most cases three coats are required for using underglaze. Each coat should be applied in opposite
directions.

When using underglazes, do not backstroke when applying, as this will cause a pile-up of paint or a pulling off of the paint already applied.

Remember that yellow underglaze will burn out at stoneware temperatures, and cobbalt blue will run, it is wise to keep a view of your work all the way from making to decoration, also keep notes, they are invaluable!
