Tip of the Week

When mixing kiln wash to use as a separating agent for touching porcelain surfaces, it should be mixed 50-50 with water.
When firing porcelain, do not place the top of a piece of ware closer than two inches to the lid or an overhead shelf.

When firing pieces such as a porcelain box with a lid, the two pieces must be fired together to insure a proper fit. Since porcelain becomes almost liquid during firing, it is necessary to coat the touch surfaces with high-fire kiln wash.

Lustres or decals may be fired onto a unglazed piece of porcelain bisque.
Some decals when fired directly on porcelain bisque will change colours so they should be test-fired before ruining your favourite piece.

Unlike ceramics, if a porcelain piece is distorted when being removed from a mold and reshaped, it will go back to the distorted shape during the firing process.
Piece selection
The selection of pieces to be cast in porcelain is important. They should be graceful, useful and fire to cone 6 without support.
