January 31, 2003, Newsletter Issue #124: Simply Sensational Slab Pots

Tip of the Week

Slab pots

Slab flop mould:
Anything can be used as a mould, although plaster is preferred.
Roll the slab as in introduction and leave it to firm approximately 1/2 hour.
Gently insert the slab into the mould and press against walls.
Then, trim the excess and leave it until the leather hardens.
The piece is now ready for bisquing!

Slab hump mould:
This is a similar technique except that we are using the clay over the mould instead of in the mould.
Roll the slab as in the introduction and place it straight over the desired mould with a piece of newspaper in between. The difference between the two techniques starts here because clay shrinks.
The form must be watched closely and removed before it shrinks so much that it cracks. When dry enough to handle, gently remove the slab from the mould and place the rim down to dry.
The piece is now ready for bisquing!
