Tip of the Week

Application and use of Majolica is dependent on the effect you are trying to achieve, below are a few tips to make the transfer of design onto the piece easier:
In order to achieve a good flowing colour, mix colour 2 parts to your glaze 1 part. This will prevent the colour crawling, and keeps the glaze and colour compatible.

Majolica - Design sectioning.
If you need to divide a plate or pot into three equal parts, you can use the top part of a lamp shade frame. The ring in the center can be used as a guide.

Majolica - Designs
If you want to create an unusual design on a piece, use one of those plastic doilies as a stencil. Simply lay one on a piece and sponge colour through the holes.

Majolica - Drawing Directly
You can draw directly onto a pot by placing design over carbon paper and tracing the design, you can also sketch right onto the surface with pencil as the lines will burn out in the firing.
